Summer Writing #1: Into the November US Election

Based on “How Kamala Harris Can Win” by Prof. Michael Sandel for the New York Times

Growing up, I watched the opening scenes to “Justice with Michael Sandel” more times than I can count. I distinctly remember the calm manner in which Professor Sandel directed his speeches, cleverly conveying profound messages within. Not long after, I fell in love with the words of philosophers and their intrinsic need to examine justice, protect liberty, and find the good life.

My mother, a great fan of politics, regularly raised similar discussions at the dinner table, rousing both fervent agreements and strong dissents. It ingrained in me a permanent reminder to constantly challenge my own views.

A topic that inevitably pops up during such meals is the presidential election, leaving me tongue-tied as I pondered, “Why was Donald Trump, with his lawsuits, still garnering support over Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor?”

Prior to reading this article, I always assumed that supporters voted for Mr. Trump since they believed in his “florid demagogy.” However, I learned that a shocking 85% of Americans felt unheard by their political leaders, especially Democratic ones. When working citizens are slighted, it becomes unsurprising that they will endorse a “hero” who rallies for their justice and respect, regardless of any legal troubles.

Ms. Harris now has the trying task of convincing voters that she values and advocates for every voice. All I know for sure is that I’m not the only one who will be watching for changes; Americans (and the world) will.
